Watercoloring with Tombow Markers

Posted under Neat 'Nique, Tutorials by , 22 April, 2009, 1 Comment

Supplies:  Watercolor paper, StazOn Ink, Tombow Markers, Water Brush, Assorted Cardstock & Buttons

The first thing you’re going to do is to stamp the image with StazOn ink.  It needs to be StazOn when you’re working with water as the other inks will blend in with the other colors and you’ll lose your image.   Scribble 2 different colors of Tombow markers onto the image leaving a good amount of white space.

use your aqua brush to swoosh the colors together.  If you want darker color effect, then don’t use too much water.  If you’d like to add accent to the image, then color in a line at the edge of the image, and pull the color into the center making sure not to pull too much.  You can smooth out the line by lightly drawing out the color from the edges with your watercolor brush.  (aquabrush)

Here we’ve inked the edges of the cardstock with the “direct to paper” technique.  It’s just a matter of using the inkpad directly to the paper instead of a dauber or sponge.  Adhere all your pieces to your cardstock and add your buttons to accent.

Scrumtious Rice Krispie Squares to Die for!

Posted under Recipe's by , 17 April, 2009, No Comment

I’m always saying how awesome my customers are when it comes to sharing, but how about this! Not only did Sheryll bring in these tasty treats for last weeks class (and still warm I might add) she also e-mailed me the recipe to share with all of you.

She warned me though, that I may never go back to regular rice krispy squares, and I must pass that warning on to all of you, ’cause she’s right! These suckers are AWESOME!

Rice Krispie Squares to Die for3/8 cup butter or margarine (maybe a smidge more)
4 regular size Mars bars chopped up (don’t use the King Size pack with 2 bars, cuz they are shorter than the regular ones, and you won’t have enough of the good stuff)
3 cups Rice Krispies
1/2 cup caramels with 1 Tbsp water
1/2 cup chocolate chips

Melt butter or margarine over low heat in large saucepan. Add Mars bars, and stir constantly until melted. The mixture will look a bit gross, as it separates and gets stringy, but stirring will bring it back to smooth. After it’s all melted stir in the krispies. Press into a greased 8 X 8 pan. Sprinkle chocolate chips over mixture while it’s still hot and press them in a bit with the back of your spoon. Melt the caramels with the water in the microwave (about 1 minute) stir to blend, then drizzle over the krispie mixture. Cool (or not) and cut into squares. These will get very crispy a lot sooner than the regular kind, so they need to be stored in an airtight container (if there are any left to store…tee hee)

Thanks Sheryll!!
I would have liked to include a photo of these treats, but by the time I got my camera ready they were all gone! I should have taken a pic of the empty plate, ha ha ha!

Decorating Eggs with Alcohol Inks

Posted under Neat 'Nique, Tutorials by , 12 April, 2009, 1 Comment

Beautiful Easter eggs can be created using this technique.  Make a card using the same formula and you’ve got a match made for giving.  If you’re not familiar with Alcohol Inks, just come into the store and we’d be happy to sit down with you and give you a little demo.

The first thing we’ll do is get the colors ready that we’ll be using on our project.  We’ve used “oregano, red pepper and mushroom” from the Tuscan Garden set as well as gold.
Begin with adding 3-4 drops of each color on the felt followed by the blending solution.  You don’t need a lot of solution.  Keep this in mind, the more solution is on your felt, the more washed out the colors will be.

Now you’re ready  to smoosh” the inked felt all over the egg and the glossy surface of your paper.  We used regular glossy white paper cut out into an egg shape.  Any non porous surface works with alcohol inks including acrylic, acetate, glass, vellum, tins etc… The inks take no time to dry.

We’ve cut shapes using our Quickutz Squeeze.  The Double Daisy is the perfect size for this project.  If you don’t have a die cutting machine, you can use peel offs.  We have a sample of this one in the store.  It’s just gorgeous.  Back to the demo…  Use double sided sticky paper (ours is from dreamweavers) to cut out the shapes.  Place them here and there all over your eggs.  (the real one and paper one)
Get your glitter ready because that’s all that’s left for you to do.  Peel off the top layer of the cut flowers to reveal the stickiness of the paper top.  Pour the glitter onto this and tap off excess.  Now your flowers have that nice glittered look.  Your egg is done and now you can place your paper egg onto card stock and add finishing touches of your own.  Then you’re done.
Have a Great Easter,
from all of us here at Cherish The Thought

Watercolouring with Twinkling H2O’s

Posted under Neat 'Nique, Tutorials by , 6 April, 2009, 1 Comment

We will be using Twinkling H2O’s, which is a watercolour paint that has some sparkle in it.  Due to the fact that Twinks have been discontinued, I will not list the colours used other than to say blue, brown etc.  However, Cherish does also carry a line of Sparkly watercolours by Art Quest, that work in the same way, if you are interested in getting into this awesome art form.  We will also be using a Koi water brush that has the water inside the body of the brush, but a regular paint brush and a cup of water will work just as well.

The first thing that you’re going to do is to stamp an image with enough empty space to color.  We’ve used our very cute Pink Cat Studio stamp of a lovely bird out on a shopping spree.  Be sure that you used Staz On ink so that your image stays crisp.  Staz On ink do not run when coloring with water paint.    The other important thing to use is watercolor paper.  We have some available at the store in the perfect size of 4″ x 6″.  It’s the perfect size for the card maker in all of us as well as for an image that you’d adhere to a layout if desired.

Step 1 – Swish your brush around inside the pot to pick up some of the light blue colour and colour in the body of the bird, the hat band, and the back of the bird’s head that is peaking out from under the hat.

Step 2- Clean off your brush by wiping it on scrap paper until the water is colourless and swish the brush in your brown paint to colour her shopping bags and her beak.  I did a second layer on some of the stripes to create a two tone effect.

               – Clean off your brush again and paint her knees, hat and scarf in Orange.

Step 3 – drop a little puddle of water into the  blue H2O container and let it sit for a minute or so.  This will allow the colour to become thicker, giving you are more vibrant tone and twinkle.

Now you can paint the wing and the tail with the thickened Blue H2O as shown in the image to the right.

Step 4 - punch a hole in her hat with your 1/16th punch and attach a small flower with a brad.

Step 5 – We believe that a project just isn’t finished unless it has perfect borders.  Here we’ve inked all our edges in brown ink .

That’s it.  Put all your nicely inked pieces together and voila! A beautifully colored (by you ), handmade card for that special person.  I hope you enjoyed this tutorial and come back to see more.

‘Twas the Night Before Christmas Projects

Posted under Scrapbooking Online by , 10 December, 2008, 1 Comment
I hope you’re all get a handle on your Christmas shopping? No last minute trips to the mall this year, right? As for me, technically I haven’t started yet, which is a bit of a shock, since I’m usually picking up stuff all year long, but somehow, this year got away from me (I wonder why…?) and I haven’t really got any idea’s. I did go to a ***** party (oopsie I forgot, my mom and sister-in-law see this, so I can’t tell you what kind of party it was) last week (thanks for the invite Chriss !) and got some stuff, but it doesn’t really count as Christmas shopping if you haven’t had to fight over a parking space, elbow through the crowds and get totally inundated with terrible versions of traditional Christmas carols. We’ll have to take Ella to visit Santa, so maybe I’ll get some shopping done this week…

‘Twas the Night Before Christmas Projects
I’m afraid that I have decided to scrap (no pun intended, tee hee) the 12 tags of Christmas, because I have a headful of neato projects that take less than an hour to do and are great little stocking stuffers and teacher gifts.

Here is a photo of the first 4, the mini back pack and mini Milk carton you may have already seen in the store, but I’ve added a mini CD Jewel case album (it measures 3” by 3.5”, it’s SOOOO cute) and a mini desk calendar. I’m also going to do the magnetic CD calendar that some of you saw at the Craft fair but my sample is at home.

You can drop in any day except Saturday, and complete any of the projects that you like, you get to pick and choose! All you need to bring is your cutter and adhesives and you’re good to go. Most of the projects are $5 but the mini album is $8 and includes a sheet of Fontwerks label stickers, that you get to keep.

Christmas Gift Wrapping
We are offering Free Gift Wrapping for any Cherished purchases this Christmas. I have chosen different patterns of Christmas paper, so you can have a Funky Pink Christmas, a traditional Christmas Tree Wrap, or a Sophisticated Gold Swirl.

Gift Certificates are also available in any denomination, and they all come with velvet flower embellishments for your Cherished Someone to keep.

Cherished Chums, because we don’t take addresses for all of you, we have your Christmas Cards here at the store, there’s a little treat inside for you, so be sure to pick yours up before the 24th… (for those of you who came and we had run out, I made more so we won’t run out again, I promise!)

See you soon!
Jessie
